# PipeCleaning.ca > The Canadian field manual for cleaning drain and sewer pipes — by method, by material, by house. PipeCleaning.ca is part of the HAUSE Sewer network — an independent Canadian information and service-request network (not a contractor). Contact: sewers@hause.ca, 403-679-3100. Pipe cleaning is the removal of clogs and buildup from drain and sewer pipes using augering (snaking), hydro jetting, mechanical descaling, enzyme treatment or, rarely wisely, chemicals. The right method depends on what is in the pipe, such as hair, grease, roots or scale, and on what the pipe is made of, because cast iron, clay, Orangeburg and plastic each tolerate different levels of force. ## Guides ### Buildings - [Condo and apartment drain stack cleaning](https://pipecleaning.ca/guides/condo-stack-cleaning/): Condo and apartment drain stack cleaning: why kitchen stacks back up on lower floors, how stacks are jetted or descaled, and how boards schedule it. - [Cleaning the main stack and plumbing vent](https://pipecleaning.ca/guides/main-stack-vent-cleaning/): Main stack and vent cleaning: gurgling and slow drains, roof vent blockages from frost and debris, stack descaling, and roof access safety. ### Maintenance - [How to clean the pipes under a kitchen or bathroom sink](https://pipecleaning.ca/guides/clean-pipes-under-sink/): How to clean the pipes under a sink: remove and scrub the P-trap, clear the trap arm, fix a slow bathroom stopper, and reassemble without leaks, step by step. - [DIY vs professional pipe cleaning: where to draw the line](https://pipecleaning.ca/guides/diy-vs-professional-pipe-cleaning/): DIY vs professional pipe cleaning: which drain jobs homeowners can do safely, which tools to skip, the injury risks, and when a pro is cheaper. - [How often to clean drain pipes, by pipe and by problem](https://pipecleaning.ca/guides/how-often-to-clean-drain-pipes/): How often to clean drain pipes: realistic intervals for kitchen lines, bathroom drains, main sewers, clay laterals with roots and cast iron. - [How to clean outside drain pipes: downspouts, yard drains and weeping tile](https://pipecleaning.ca/guides/outside-drain-pipe-cleaning/): How to clean outside drain pipes in Canada: downspout leaders, yard drains, weeping tile, sump lines and the sewer cleanout, plus thawing frozen lines. ### Materials - [Cleaning ABS and PVC drain pipe safely](https://pipecleaning.ca/guides/abs-pvc-pipe-cleaning/): How to clean ABS and PVC drain pipe: safe auger heads and jet nozzles for plastic, why chemical cleaners and heat are risky, and how to protect joints. - [Cleaning cast iron drain pipes and descaling tuberculation](https://pipecleaning.ca/guides/cast-iron-drain-pipe-cleaning/): How to clean cast iron drain pipes: why tuberculation forms, how staged descaling works, when jetting is safe, and when replacement beats cleaning. - [Cast iron drain pipe explained: joints, sizes, lead and cutting](https://pipecleaning.ca/guides/cast-iron-pipe-joints-and-cutting/): What is cast iron drain pipe?
